Sintra feels like stepping into a storybook. While popular spots like Pena Palace, Cascais, and Quinta da Regaleira are well-known and just a short trip from Lisbon, it’s the perfect day trip or weekend getaway for families seeking a touch of enchantment. Here, I will share with you some true gems of Sintra that aren’t talked about as much! Also our kids still talk about feeling like royalty while exploring Pena Palace!
Fun Things To Do
13. Ursa Beach
One of Portugal’s hidden coastal treasures! Ursa Beach, with its dramatic cliffs and pristine sands, offers a breathtaking escape from the bustle of town. The journey down might be a bit challenging, but the reward is worth it – a secluded paradise where you can bask in nature’s raw beauty. (Note: It’s a 30-minute drive from Sintra’s center.)
Perfect for adventurous families with older children. Not suitable for those with mobility issues or very young children due to the steep access.
Lush gardens and historic charm at Quinta Da Ribafria. This beautiful estate offers a peaceful retreat with its manicured grounds, charming fountains, and centuries-old trees. It’s a lesser-known spot that provides a tranquil alternative to Sintra’s busier attractions.

Other Tips For Families
- Car – Parking: If you are taking a car, keep in mind that some locals will request that you pay a ticket. You aren’t obligated to pay for these tickets, but it’s safer to comply, especially considering potential rental car charges. Opt for the first available parking spot you find, either on the street or in nearby lots, to avoid wasting time and experiencing frustration navigating one-way streets. Or stick to public parking lots in the center and hike in.
- Transportation Recommendation: Driving to Sintra can be frustrating due to limited parking options. A convenient and efficient mode of transportation is to take the train from Lisbon.
- Best Season – Weather: Peak travel months in Portugal are typically June to September. Although Sintra is generally warm during the day, evenings can be chilly, even in July. Bring along long sleeves or a light jacket to stay comfortable. Bringing an umbrella to Sintra is always advisable, even if it’s sunny in Lisbon! All museums in Lisbon are closed on Mondays, so Sintra can get especially busy on Mondays. For this reason, I recommend avoiding Sintra on Mondays.

- Morning: Visit Pena Palace and Park – Explore the historic town center of Sintra
- Lunch: Enjoy a meal at Saudade restaurant in the town center
- Afternoon: Tour the Quinta da Regaleira estate – Visit the Moorish Castle

Bonus Hidden Gems Around Portugal
1. Monsanto
Alright, let’s dive into the magical world of Monsanto!
Imagine this: You and your little adventurers step into a village that looks like it’s been plucked straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Welcome to Monsanto, the “most Portuguese village in Portugal”!
Picture giant boulders scattered across the hillside, with charming little houses nestled between, under, and sometimes even inside these massive rocks. It’s like Mother Nature and human ingenuity decided to play a game of hide-and-seek, and the result is breathtaking!
As you wander the narrow, winding streets, your kids will feel like they’ve stumbled into a real-life version of The Flintstones’ Bedrock. They can peek into houses with boulder roofs, touch walls that are part stone/part rock, and let their imaginations run wild. Who lived here? How did they build these homes? Were there giants involved? The stories practically write themselves!
Don’t miss the climb to the castle ruins at the top of the hill. It’s a bit of a hike, but the views are out of this world. The huge, precariously balanced boulder called the “Hanging Stone” will have everyone’s jaws dropping.
Pro tip: Bring good walking shoes, a camera, and a sense of wonder. Oh, and maybe pack a pebble or two for the kids to take home – though I promise, the memories will be the real souvenirs here!
Just a stone’s throw from the bustling streets of Lisbon, you can escape into a slice of Portuguese paradise. Arrábida Natural Park is like Mother Nature’s greatest hits album, all in one spot! Many claim it to look like the Carribean come to Portugal. It truly is stunning.
First up, those beaches – oh my! Imagine crystal-clear turquoise waters hugging white sand shores, all nestled at the foot of lush green hills. Portinho da Arrábida beach is a family favorite, with calm waters perfect for little swimmers. It’s like someone took a Caribbean postcard and plopped it right in Portugal!
But wait, there’s more! Lace up those hiking boots, and hit the trails. The park is crisscrossed with paths for all levels, from easy-peasy strolls to more challenging treks. As you wind through the Mediterranean-like forest, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife. It’s like a real-life nature documentary!
Now, here’s where it gets really exciting – dolphin watching! Hop on a boat tour from Setúbal and prepare for some serious “oohs” and “aahs” as these playful creatures dance in the waves. It’s the kind of experience that’ll have your kids talking for years!
Don’t forget to sample some of the local goodies. The region is famous for its cheese and wine (for the grown-ups, of course). Maybe pack a picnic, and find your own perfect spot to soak in the views?
Arrábida Natural Park is more than just a day trip – it’s a full-on family adventure. Whether you’re building sandcastles, spotting dolphins, or simply breathing in that fresh mountain air, it’s the perfect antidote to city life.
Pro tip: Pack for all occasions – swimsuits, hiking shoes, and maybe some binoculars for wildlife spotting. Oh, and don’t forget the camera. Note that in the summer, parking is extremely limited or not available at all and you may need to bus into this area.
Picture this: You’ve made it to the sun-soaked Algarve, and now you’re ready for the ultimate family chill-out spot. Enter Culatra Island – your very own slice of Portuguese paradise!
Hop on a quick boat ride from Olhão or Faro, and watch as the mainland fades away. As you approach Culatra, you’ll notice something magical – no cars! That’s right, this island is all about slowing down and soaking up the good vibes.
The moment your feet hit the sandy paths, you’ll feel the stress melt away. It’s like someone pressed the pause button on the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Kids can run free, build sandcastles, and splash in the crystal-clear waters without a care in the world.
The beaches here? Oh boy, they’re something else! Imagine endless stretches of golden sand, with the Atlantic gently lapping at the shore. It’s the kind of place where “just five more minutes” turns into hours of family fun.
Hungry? The island’s restaurants serve up the freshest seafood you’ve ever tasted. It’s so fresh, you might just see your lunch swimming in the ocean that morning!
Culatra Island isn’t just a destination; it’s a mood. It’s where family memories are made, where time slows down, and where you remember what really matters – those precious moments together.
Pro tip: Pack light, bring sunscreen, and leave your watches behind. On Culatra, the only schedule you need to follow is the rhythm of the tides and your own sense of adventure!
