As someone who just hit their 50th country milestone in India (can you believe it?), I’m buzzing to share all the packing wisdom I’ve gathered. There were a few items we didn’t take that I wish we did!

Packing List for Your India Trip
Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room – the weather. We went in early June, and let me tell you, it was HOT! If you’re visiting during summer (March to May), prepare for some serious heat. Here’s what you’ll need:
Essentials for Getting to India
- Debit card to get some quick cash. While India isn’t as cash-based as some places we’ve been, it’s recommended to have around 500 rupees with you. If you are going with a tour, you’ll only be using cash for tips. We paid with credit cards at all restaurants, and most tourist shops will also happily accept credit cards!
- If you plan to eat on the street, take cash for sure. Be cautious not to carry too much cash either.
- (Pro Tip: Charles Schwab Debit Card refunds ALL ATM fees globally! You can save a fortune on foreign fees!)
- Travel Insurance. Make sure to get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical emergencies and trip cancellations. Especially when traveling to less developed countries, you want to have some travel insurance in hand.
- Vaccines. While India doesn’t require any shots for entry (unless you’re coming from a yellow fever hotspot), the CDC suggests a few.
- Hepatitis A and Typhoid are their top picks, but there’s a whole list of recommended vaccines for your Indian adventure.
- We got up to date with Cholera, Typhoid, and Hepatitis A. The best way to go about this is to get a travel consultation with your doctor or local health center. They can map out the schedule for you of what to get and when, as these take several weeks to be effective. We started about two months before our trip, and it was tight! Leave plenty of time to get this done.
Clothing To Take to India
For Summer: Beat the Heat in Style
- 4-5 sets of lightweight, breathable shirts and pants/shorts (Think cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking fabrics)
- 1-2 fancy outfits for those romantic dinners or upscale restaurants (anniversary vibes or special dinner)
- Comfortable walking shoes (Your feet will thank you after exploring the Taj Mahal)
- Sandals (Perfect for those impromptu temple visits)
- Light jacket or sweater (For chilly evenings or overzealous AC)
- Hat or cap (Sun protection is key!)
- Sunglasses (You’ll want these for those epic Taj Mahal selfies)
- Swimsuits (Hotel pool, anyone?)
- Sleepwear (Keep it light and comfy)
- Undergarments and socks (Pack extra, trust me on this one)
Pro Tip: Pack matching or coordinating outfits for those Instagram-worthy couple photos. The Taj Mahal offers the perfect backdrop for capturing stunning shots! Check out my top tour recommendation for making the most of your visit here.
For Winter: Stay Warm & Dry
Northern India can get pretty chilly from November to January, with nighttime and early morning temperatures dipping into the upper 30s°F. While daytime highs can reach the 80s°F, it still feels cool if you’re not in the sun. Things start to warm up by February and March, but expect those early mornings to remain brisk. And don’t forget about the rainy season, which usually runs from June to September. Plan accordingly to make the most of your adventure!
- For Rainy Days
- Umbrella
- Waterproof jacket
- Waterproof pants
- Boots
- Dry bags or reusable waterproof bags
- 2-3 Layers
- Warm hat, gloves, scarf, long pants, potentially long underwear, and a warm down jacket
- Lightweight neck gaiter
- Long-sleeved, lightweight shirts
Toiletries: Stay Fresh in the Indian Heat
- Toothbrush and toothpaste (Obvious, but easy to forget!)
- Deodorant (A must-have in the Indian heat)
- Shampoo and conditioner (Travel-sized, of course. I like to bring higher quality shampoo from home)
- Sunscreen. I love this daily moisturizer with spf and some skin-clearing ingredients for daily use.
- Active Serum. I LOVE this stuff. It helps combat acne breakouts, which can be common when traveling to a new climate. I tend to get acne in humid, hot places, but this serum has curbed it!
- Insect repellent (Those mosquitos can be pesky)
- Hand sanitizer (You’ll use this more than you think)
- Travel-sized first aid kit (Including pain relievers, anti-diarrheal, antacids, etc)
Accessories: The Little Things That Make a Big Difference
- Day bag or backpack (For all your sightseeing adventures)
- Money belt or secure wallet (Keep those rupees safe!)
- Reusable water bottles (Stay hydrated, my friends)
- Travel towel (Quick-drying and super handy)
- Plastic zip-top bags (Trust me, these are lifesavers)
- Travel laundry detergent packets (For those “oops, I spilled curry” moments)
- Lip balm
- A portable fan to keep you cool (Trust me on this one!)
Happy Travels Essentials
- Power adapters. We love this adapter and carry several with us on all trips. Not only can they adapt to any plug anywhere, but we can charge several devices with the four USB plugs.
- Neck pillow. Our favorite came in very handy on long drives, and we loved it on the flight.
- Camera and charger. Your phone camera won’t do justice for some sights, such as the amazing Taj Mahal and India’s Golden Triangle trip (which deserve more than just a phone camera).
Pro Tip: Don’t take drones; they are not permitted in India and are very likely to be confiscated when you arrive. We didn’t bring any of ours.
- Power bank. (You don’t want to miss a photo op because of a dead battery)
- Tablet or Kindle. (For those long rides or flights)
Miscellaneous: The Random (But Useful) Bits
- Travel guidebook or downloaded travel apps (Having an offline map can save your life!)
- Phrase book or language app for basic Hindi (The locals appreciate the effort)
- Snacks for long drives or flights (Hangry travelers are not happy travelers)
- Reusable shopping bag (For all those irresistible souvenirs)
- Scarf or shawl (Great for visiting temples or extra sun protection)
India-Specific Items: The “I Wish Someone Had Told Me” List
- Toilet paper (Not always provided in public restrooms)
- Wet wipes (A true lifesaver)
- Peppermint tablets. While I didn’t try this, I read about it and thought it was brilliant! These are super cheap in India and can be used as a homeopathic remedy. Head to any local pharmacy to ask about them.
- Also consider charcoal, garlic tablets, wormwood, grapefruit seed extract, and others.
- Bring electrolyte tablets and stay well hydrated.
- Consider Travelan, an immune support supplement, that can be taken 48 hours before you travel and before each meal. The reviews speak for themselves!
- Prescriptions. You may get some medications from your travel consult about vaccines that you need to take to India. We took several: anti-diarrhea, pain meds, probiotics, etc. Thankfully we didn’t need them, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Remember to pack light and leave some space in your luggage for souvenirs. India is a shopper’s paradise with its vibrant textiles, intricate handicrafts, and aromatic spices. You’ll want to bring a piece of India back home with you!
