New Zealand Destination Guide For Families

Before you start planning your trip, you’ll need to know that New Zealand is made up of two large islands – the North and the South. So as you’re planning, there are plenty of places to choose from for your visit! Chances are high that you’ll only have enough time to visit one island or at least spend most of your time on one island. In this blog post, you can find my top recommendations to make this trip valuable with kids!
Let’s start with a little bit of history. New Zealand is celebrated as the adventure capital of the world and has diverse landscapes, vibrant cultures, and unique wildlife. From discovering Maori traditions and exploring breathtaking fjords to savoring delicious cuisine and enjoying the friendly hospitality of its people, New Zealand promises families an extraordinary journey filled with wonder and excitement. So what are you waiting for?!
Here is the map of New Zealand, so you can track the places I am going to mention below and make the best itinerary that adapts to your family.

New Zealand’s diverse landscapes, including pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and majestic mountains, create a spectacular setting for family adventures. Both islands offer unique experiences. The South Island, with its tourist amenities, boasts stunning destinations like Mt. Cook and Milford Sound, perfect for those seeking a more traditional tourist experience. Conversely, the North Island offers unforgettable activities like sand boarding at Te Paki Sand Dunes and relaxing at Hot Water Beach. Whichever island you choose, an amazing adventure awaits your family. Read on to learn more about the most important things to do on each island.

How To Keep Your Family Safe In New Zealand
Is New Zealand safe? Yes, very. However, there are some thefts and small crimes. Never leave valuables in your car. This can especially be true at touristy destinations, parking lots of hikes, etc. Just be as careful as you can.
There can also be an undercurrent of cultural differences. When we lived in Turangi during the Covid lockdown, there were some times we certainly felt unwelcome as tourists. However, these were stressful times, and, for the most part, everyone was very kind and helpful.

After more than two years of traveling with kids full time, New Zealand has become the most child-friendly destination in the world for us. It’s a very strong contender for somewhere we want to live with our five kids and should absolutely be on your list for a family vacation.
We spent seven wonderful months in New Zealand exploring the North and South Islands with the kids. We can’t wait to return! We couldn’t believe the incredible scenery this country has to offer. The isolation from the rest of the world keeps New Zealand special and beautiful. As long as you can learn to drive on the left side of the road (not as easy as you might think!), you can drive this entire country and drink in the beauty.
Enjoy New Zealand!
Xoxo,
Leslie
