Bordeaux transforms into a magical winter paradise during the holiday season, offering families an enchanting Christmas market experience that captures the heart of French festive traditions. From late November to late December, the city comes alive with twinkling lights, joyful sounds, and the warmth of holiday cheer.

Bordeaux was en route for us on our way from Lisbon to the Loire Valley, where we spent a couple of weeks eating way too much French food and exploring the amazing chateaux of this area.  I loved this Bordeaux market more than the two we saw in Spain, although I love all Christmas markets in Europe.

The Bordeaux Christmas Market, nestled in the historic Place des Quinconces, is more than just a shopping destination—it’s a celebration of local culture, craftsmanship, and holiday spirit. Over a hundred stallholders create a vibrant marketplace where artisans and traders showcase original gift ideas, from handcrafted decorations to local produce.  We bought some delicious cheese, had some hot cocoa, and enjoyed the carousel for the kids.

Main Bordeaux Christmas Market Essentials:

Getting to Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux boasts an excellent public transportation system, providing plenty of options to navigate the Christmas markets easily.

Reaching the Christmas market is remarkably easy, thanks to Bordeaux’s excellent public transportation system. The city’s tram and bus networks provide convenient access to the market, making it simple for families to explore without the hassle of parking.

Or, if you are driving in, as we did, park nearby and take the train in!  We did this, and it was quick and easy.

We opted for a private parking spot to leave the car, which I highly recommend if you’re driving.

If you’re using public transportation, here are your options for getting around by bus or tram, along with a ticket pricing breakdown:

Adult Tickets:

  • Single Journey Ticket: €1.70
  • Day Pass: €4.50
  • Multi-Day Pass (3 days): €10.00

Children’s Pricing:

  • Children under 5: FREE
  • Children 5-11: Reduced rate tickets (approximately €0.85)
  • Children 12 and above: Full adult fare

Types of Tickets

1. Individual Tickets – Perfect for short stays or spontaneous travelers. These one-time-use tickets are ideal for a few trips around the city.

2. Transport Cards (TBM Pass) – The ultimate solution for families! These cards offer:

  • Unlimited travel within a set period
  • Convenience for multiple family members
  • Cost-effective for longer stays

Pro Family Tip: Grab a transport card if you’re traveling with kids. And remember to always validate your ticket before jumping on a bus or tram. It’s a simple step that prevents unexpected penalties.

Note: To validate your ticket on trams and buses, look for yellow validation machines inside the trams or near the bus entrances. Wait for a clear stamp or a beep sound, as the machine will print the validation time on your ticket.

Merry-Go-Round.
  • Hungry kids = grumpy kids.  Either eat before exploring the market or grab some food and crepes to keep little tummies happy.
  • We know managing kids during crowded events can be tricky. Here’s our insider scheduling:
    • Late morning (around 11 am) – Markets are fresh and less crowded
    • Early afternoons – Before the peak tourist rush
    • Avoid late evenings to keep those little holiday spirits (and moods) bright!
  • To make this trip extra special, involve your kids in the planning. Let them get excited about the workshops, the performances, and the magical atmosphere waiting in Bordeaux!
