Are you heading to Egypt with kids? Congratulations! You’ve made a great decision. We loved our trip to Egypt and would happily go back again.
We went to Egypt a bit last minute in April and left only wanting more. We did everything super last minute, but Egypt is designed for tourism so we didn’t feel like we had to leave anything on the table! We saw SO much while there, and our guides were so good. Egypt showcases mind-blowing history and will delight even the smallest of travelers.
When preparing for your trip, you’ll inevitably face the age-old question of what to pack. Going international with kids adds an extra layer of complexity, but it’s nothing you can’t handle.

What To Pack When Going To Egypt With Kids
It’s important to know that the weather in Egypt is HOT. We went in April and nearly melted (June and July can reach up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit). This is good news in terms of packing, as summer clothes are generally lighter and easier to pack.
What Clothing To Pack For Egypt
- Shorts and T-shirts. I’d recommend 4-5 sets, depending on your itinerary.
- We always throw in some matching shirts (or coordinating colors) for a nice picture, which you’ll want in front of the pyramids!
- Sandals and tennis shoes. You’ll be walking a lot, so bring those trusted pairs that won’t give you blisters.
- Swimsuits. This is a MUST. Your hotels in Egypt will likely have pools, and you’ll love to cool off after a day of sightseeing in the hot, dry conditions. Thankfully, they dry fast!
- Sandals
- Lightweight pajamas
- Layering top, such as a jacket or sweatshirt. With high temps during the day come cooler nights, and you might want a light jacket for something like your hot air balloon over Luxor.
Toiletries To Pack For Egypt As A Family
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Brushes and hair care products
- Deodorant
- Shampoo/soap/conditioner. We always have the kids use the hotel options, but I like to bring higher quality shampoo from home for myself.
- Insect repellent. There are mosquitos.
- Sunscreen. I love this daily moisturizer with some skin-clearing ingredients for daily use. I also have the kids use the non-tinted version. It’s incredibly lightweight and doesn’t bother sensitive skin.
- Make-up/skincare. And I love this bag to keep everything together.
- Sanitizer. Take a travel size in your day pack as bathrooms can be sketchy.
- First aid items. Band-Aids, antibacterial gel, tweezers, antihistamine, melatonin for jet lag, pain reliever, travel thermometer.
Baby Items To Pack When Going To Egypt
- Travel bed. This is perfect for your baby to feel comfortable for naps!
- Travel stroller
- Baby carrier
- Diapers and wipes. You can also buy them there fairly easily.
- Formula and bottles
- Snacks and toys
Accessories To Pack For Egypt
- Sunglasses. Expect lots of sun. These are a must.
- Hat. This is mostly for the heat but also for sun protection.
- Day bag and/or backpack. You’ll need to cart around some snacks and water, not to mention sunscreen and souvenirs.
- Travel towel. Sometimes towels are hit or miss at hotels, and you might want to take a dip in the Nile!
- Double-walled water bottle. Keep water cool.
- Zipper plastic bags. You never know when you need one, so we always pack a few.
- Carabiners. These can be so handy on a daypack or backpack.
- Travel laundry packet or small bag of detergent for hand washing in the hotel.
- Travel scarf. While Egypt isn’t as conservative as you might think, you do need sleeves and longer shorts/skirts for mosques. It’s good to have a scarf to throw on over bare shoulders or as a quick skirt.
International Travel Items To Pack For Egypt
- Power adapters. We love this adapter and carry several with us on all trips. Not only can they adapt to any plug anywhere, but we can charge several devices with the four USB plugs. I can get all the kids tablets ready for the flights ahead.
- Cash. If you are doing the Visa on Demand, you’ll need some cash. You’ll need at least $25 per person (which for us was a huge wad of cash). They will also accept Euros. See my tips here on how this works.
- Neck pillow. Our favorite came in very handy on long drives, such as to Abu Simbel, when we could catch a nap. Of course, we also loved it on the flight. Our flight times were overnight, even to Europe.
- Passport holder. You’ll need passports at every hotel check-in and sometimes even to prove the ages for the kids. Have a handy holder to keep it all organized.
- Student ids for the preteens and teens. If your older kids have a student id from school, bring it! Most of the attractions in Egypt have student pricing.
- White noise machine for travel . Bringing a backup and the plug with an adapter is a good idea.
- Tablets and Kindles for the kids. You may need entertainment for car rides, depending on how you get around Egypt.
- Debit card to get some quick cash. Egypt is a very cash-based society, and we took out cash nearly daily. (Pro Tip: Charles Schwab Debit Card refunds ALL ATM fees globally! You can save a fortune on foreign fees!)
Random Packing Items To Consider When Traveling To Egypt
- Toilet Paper. You have to pay for this in the bathrooms. You also have to pay to use the bathrooms, and GOOD LUCK getting change into smaller bills or coins! Everyone hates this. We had to rely on our guides sometimes.
- Pool toys for hotel pools.
- Small games for restaurant dinners.
Important Things To Remember When Traveling To Egypt
- Travel Insurance: Make sure to get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical emergencies and trip cancellations.
- Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of crucial phone numbers, like the local embassy or consulate, for any emergency situations.
